Chisinau, 29 December /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu and President of Romania Klaus Iohannis today signed a joint declaration, thereby reconfirming the special character of the bilateral relations.

At a joint news conference, President Maia Sandu said that Romania and Moldova as of today re-entered a new stage of brotherly and open interaction. ‘’ On these days, Moldova enters a new phase, both at the domestic and external levels. A stage of getting out of isolation, a phase of re-launching the Strategic Partnership with EU,’’ Sandu said.

Maia Sandu thanked Klaus Iohannis for the support provided by Romania to Moldova in all years since the proclamation of the Independence. She noted that, due to Bucharest’s financial support, schools and kindergartens had been repaired, schools buses were bought and cultural programmes were backed. Also, the head of state thanked Bucharest for the assistance provided since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as for the working visit by Romanian physicians.

The Romanian president specified that Romania was and would stay the sincere friend and principal partner of Moldova’s citizens. ‘’My presence, the investments made by Romania unselfishly, as well as the significant assistance provided by Romania in the last year prove this fact. We are by the side of Moldova’s president and we are prepared to supply the assistance for the reform-oriented programme and management of multiple crises,’’ Klaus Iohannis said.

Iohannis also informed about a new package of support for Moldova’s citizens. It provides for the quick conclusion of the sixth additional protocol to the bilateral agreement on the grant worth 100 million euros. Also, Romania will provide 200,000 doses of vaccine to Moldova and will sent to Chisinau, on the immediately next period, a team of experts due to help prepare the vaccination strategy.

In the end of the news conference, the two heads of state signed a joint declaration and Maia Sandu gave her counterpart a commemorative coin dedicated to physicians. The declaration reads that Romania and Moldova highlight the special importance of deepening the cooperation, with emphasis on aspects of strategic interest and express resolution to act together in a coordinated way to achieve the joint goals.
