Joint Declaration of Moldova’s President Maia Sandu and Romania’s President Klaus Werner

Chisinau, 29 December 2020

The Republic of Moldova and Romania reaffirm the special character of the bilateral relation based on the community of language, culture and history and substantiated on the Strategic Partnership for European Integration of Moldova, the tenth anniversary of which we mark in 2020. Also, Moldova and Romania reconfirm the fact that Moldova’s natural place is in the European family. Romania stresses the legitimate character of Moldova’s citizens’ expectations for a prosperous living, in a stable and democratic state, with modern public institutions and an independent justice and will continue supporting the achievement of the fundamental goal represented by the European integration of Moldova, the only one able to ensure the stability, economic and social development of Moldova. Romania commits to remain the sincerest backer of Moldova’s citizens, just as it has already acted and will continue to do this in the context of the crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. For its part, Moldova reaffirms full resolution to continue building a democratic and prosperous state, including by strengthening its European integration and benefiting from the support and cooperation provided within the bilateral Strategic Partnership. Highlighting the importance of the full implementation of the Association Agreement with the European Union, including the provisions concerning the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA), Moldova reaffirms its commitment to continue implementing the democratic reforms, with special emphasis put on the ones dealing with the justice reform, rule of law state, combating corruption and ensuring the mass media’s independence.  Recognizing the contribution of the bilateral cooperation projects underway carried out by Romania in Moldova to the efforts of improving the living standards of all Moldova’s citizens, no matter the geographic zone where they live, the language spoken, political orientation, Moldova underlines the commitment to continue implementing the cooperation projects underway carried out with Romania, including and especially of strategic projects from the infrastructure sector, as well as the determination to support and protect Romania’s investment presence in Moldova. Reiterating the special importance of promoting the respect for the common language, culture and history, the sides reaffirm the inestimable value of the common cultural heritage, which is component part of the European heritage, which substantiates the privileged relation between Moldova and Romania. Having in view the aforementioned, the sides point out the special importance of deepening the cooperation between Moldova and Romania, with emphasis on aspects of strategic interest and express resolution to work together in a coordinated way to achieve our common objectives.
