Moldovan president says EU's assistance quite important for stabilization of economic situation in Moldova

Chisinau, 18 January /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today afternoon had a meeting with European Commission for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, the presidential press service has reported.  

Among the subjects tackled, there were the updating of the Association Agreement, joint working out of an action plan specific for the country’s needs within the Eastern Partnership and providing Moldova with necessary assistance, to approach immediate problems faced by the citizens.   

„Moldova needs help to attenuate the impact of the economic and sanitary crisis, especially to support the farmers and entrepreneurs. Moldova’s interest is to extend and deepen the cooperation with EU in more sectors, including on the dimension of the foreign policy, as well as in terms of continuous integration in the economy, energy, environmental protection and services fields,’’ President Maia Sandu said following the meeting.    

„I discussed the way we can cooperate with the European Union, in order to manage to create new jobs and new opportunities, as well as ways EU can back Moldova, in order to launch projects in the energy and infrastructure system,’’ the head of state also said.  

Another subject tackled at the meeting was focused on the direct cooperation and assistance provided by EU for Moldova’s settlements and mayoralties. Maia Sandu stressed that this type of support would help Moldova consolidate the democracy locally and diminish the local public administration’s dependence on the financing conditioned through political pressure.  

Also, President Maia Sandu asked for the increase in the support meant for Moldova for the next years. ‘’I emphasized that the EU’s assistance is quite important for the stabilization of the economic situation in Moldova, especially in order to diminish the effects of the pandemic. We want a close cooperation with the European Commission, in order to modernize our country for the benefit of all citizens,’’ the Moldovan head of state said at the end of the meeting with Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi.
