Chisinau, 21 January /MOLDPRES/ - The constitutional judges have ruled that the Russian language would not have status of language of inter-ethnic communication in Moldova.

The Constitutional Court (CCM) today declared unconstitutional the law on the functioning of the languages spoken in Moldova, amended at the parliament meeting from 16 December 2020. The amendments brought to this law were giving a privileged status to the Russian language, which was becoming language of inter-ethnic communication.

The law stipulated, inter alia, that all official acts and names of state institutions should be translated in Russian and the authorities will have to give answers to requests in the Russian language in the same language. The actions at law or hearings will be held in Russian, if this is requested.

The today’s meeting of the Constitutional Court brought two groups of citizens outside the CCM building , who organized concomitant protests. Some of the protesters backed the cancellation of the law, while the others supported the Russian language’s status of language of inter-ethnic communication.
