Chisinau, 18 February /MOLDPRES/ - The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) today holds, with the Council of Europe’s support, a conference on post-electoral analysis titled, Presidential elections in Moldova 2020: analysis, conclusions, recommendations and steps to be taken.

Attending the event are representatives of the central and local public authorities, political parties, experts in electoral issues, national and international observers who monitored the presidential polls, electoral civil servants, representatives of the civil society and mass media.

In the beginning of the conference, CEC head Dorin Cimil greeted the participants in the event, noting that the recent presidential elections had been a challenge for everybody and an exam passed successfully. ‘’The organization of the ballot in good conditions is due to the experience and professionalism of those over 20,000 electoral civil servants , as well as the efficient inter-institutional cooperation, just as to the exchange of good practices with the counterpart institutions and the specialized international institutions,’’ the CEC head said.

At the same time, Dorin Cimil pointed out that, on the next period, after an assessment of what had happened at the presidential elections from 1 November 2020, CEC would take efforts to improve the electoral processes in line with the values, mission and vision assumed by the institution. ‘’We want to maintain a constant and open dialogue with all electoral subjects, in order to improve the legislative framework in electoral matters,’’ Cimil noted.

Head of the Council of Europe’s Office in Chisinau William Massolin said that, because of the pandemic, the Council of Europe had not been able to send an observation mission to these elections. ‘’Fortunately, yet, we had a team of local observers, which worked based on the earlier set recommendations. Some of them were not fully enforced. Subsequently, we will make more conclusions and a deeper analysis, in order to see how we could improve the electoral activity. We will continue monitoring what is happening in the electoral context in Moldova. At the same time, we will analyze recommendations by international institutions, to continue improving the present standards and the electoral processes in Moldova,’’ the European official said.

The subjects on the agenda for the first day of the conference regard the work of the initiative groups for backing the candidates for the office of Moldova’s president and of the electoral contenders, contentious electoral matters and participating of special categories of electors in the voting.
