Presidency to support research, innovation development initiatives in Moldova

Chisinau, 3 March /MOLDPRES/- President Maia Sandu and presidential adviser in education and research Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei had a discussion on Tuesday with representatives of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova - Ion Tighineanu and Mihai Cimpoi - and head of the Board of Research Institutes Alexandru Stratan, the presidential press service has reported.

"We talked to them about actions needed to support research and innovation, so that its results have a real impact on the development of our economy and society," said Maia Sandu. At the same time, she noted the need for a real improvement of the Code on Science and Innovation, which will be able to ensure the rigorous evaluation of research organizations and the effectiveness of funding methodologies in the field.

Another topic of the meeting was the need to connect research to real human issues, such as climate change. Among other challenges, Maia Sandu highlighted the stimulation of young researchers and cooperation between universities and research institutes, as well as the involvement of Moldovan researchers in the diaspora in the work of home institutions. According to the head of state, all this will help us have a modern research and innovation system that aligns with advanced experiences in the world.

"I expressed my hope that in June, when ASM plans to organize Science Week, dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Academy, the pandemic situation will be better, and the initiative to promote a Year of Science and Research Education will be able to be achieved in the near future, " Maia Sandu said.
