Chisinau, 3 March /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today had a meeting with Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Moldova Steven Mark Fisher. The head of state thanked the British government for the solidarity displayed on this difficult period, as well as for the support provided to Moldova during years.

According to the presidential press service, a focus of the discussion was a decision by the London authorities to return to Moldova the funds retained from bank accounts of Moldovan citizen Luca Filat – about 11.26 million lei. President Maia Sandu expressed gratitude for this decision. In the context, the officials discussed the need to create an efficient and transparent mechanism, through which the funds recovered should be used in projects due to bring benefits to people.

„This is, in fact, the first recovery of means earlier extracted from the country and which will return home; this confirms the necessity to further cooperate with the British government, as well as with the governments of other states, so that we can recover for our citizens the money illegally earned in Moldova and used in other countries,’’ Maia Sandu said.

Ambassador Steven Mark Fisher gave assurances that the United Kingdom would back the democratic processes and the strengthening of the institutions from Moldova. ‘’I voiced confidence that the boosting of the Moldovan-British cooperation will lead to the enhancement of economic, social and cultural  initiatives,’’ the head of state stressed.
