Platform for studying Romanian, Gagauz language launched in Gagauzia

Chisinau, 4 March /MOLDPRES/- The Institute for Strategic Initiatives IPIS launched the platform to promote the study of the Romanian and Gagauz language in Gagauzia. The first meeting of platform members took place this week.

The platform is made up of representatives of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Moldova, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research, the Agency for Interethnic Relations, the General Directorate for Education from Comrat, the governor of Gagauzia, MPs of parliament and of People's Assembly of Gagauzia, local authorities, rectors of state universities, civil society representatives, the Equality Council, development partners, as well as local and international experts.

The participants exchanged views on the general situation related to studying Gagauz and Romanian language in autonomy and proposed a set of recommendations to boost the process. The IPIS team will systematize the information so that later national and international experts can start developing a concrete action plan to promote multilingual education in the region.

The event was held within the project Promoting social cohesion in Moldova by studying the Gagauz and Romanian language in Gagauzia. The project is funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Soros Foundation Moldova.

The main goal of the project is to support the preservation of the Gagauz language and culture, as well as the maximum involvement of the inhabitants of autonomy in the social processes and governance of the country, by studying the state language.
