Moldovan president has discussion with German Chancellor

Chisinau, 9 March /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today evening discussed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a videoconference format. The head of state thanked for the constant support of Germany, provided to the Moldovan citizens and the democratic values in Moldova, the presidential press service has reported.  

„In particular, I expressed gratitude for the assistance provided during 2020 in the fight with the pandemic and for the generous contribution on the COVAX platform, through which Moldova benefits from vaccine for free. Germany is an important development partner for Moldova and we want to boost the political dialogue, as well as consolidate the economic relations,’’ Maia Sandu said.  

Also, the two leaders discussed the epidemiological situation in Moldova, as well as Germany’s experience in ceasing the spread of the infection and in enforcing the measures of backing the economy in crisis. The Moldovan president and the German chancellor exchanged opinions on the process of re-launch of the economy on the post-Covid period.   

„We spoke about the political crisis in Moldova and I stressed that the Moldovan citizens want true reforms, rule of law state and sanctioning of the corrupt people. These reforms can be promoted only by a parliament which is to represent the people’s will. Mrs. Merkel assured me that she would keep a close eye on the developments in Moldova and that Germany would further support the people’s efforts to edify a democratic and just society,’’ the head of state said.

In the end of the discussion, the sides agreed that they would work for strengthening the Moldovan-German relations, especially as regards Moldova’s European agenda and the anti-corruption reforms.
