Moldovan president suggests return to pensions' indexation once per year based on inflation from previous year

Chisinau, 10 March /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu has submitted to parliament a proposal to return to the pensions’ indexation once per year based on the inflation from the year before. The adoption of this amendment would mean a 3.7-per cent indexation in April, equivalent to the increase of prices in 2020, the presidential press service has reported.

„The switch to the pensions’ indexation twice per year, promoted by the Socialists with much ostentation in February 2020, further hits the pensioners. After the shameful one-per cent indexation from October 2020, this year, the pensions are supposed not to be indexed at all in April.  This mistake must be urgently corrected. There is money for this indexation,’’ the head of state said.

According to the president, the 426 million lei needed for financing this measure can be covered at the expense of the agreement on financing worth 15 million euros between Moldova and the European Commission, signed on 22 February 2021, and at the expense of the revision of the current expenses for assets and services.

„I call on all forces from parliament to put the politics aside and back this initiative. At the same time, I emphasize that the experiments of the irresponsible politicians at the expense of the pensioners are inadmissible. The increase in pensions must be made through increasing the minimal pension, by speeding up the recalculation of the pensions of those who worked after the increase of the retirement age and through other instruments means namely on this purpose,’’ President Maia Sandu added.
