Moldovan prosecutors make searches in file on infestigating bank fraud

Chisinau, 11 March /MOLDPRES/ - Prosecutors of the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating the Organized Crime and Special Causes (PCCOCS) today made searches at the home and job office of the former special manager of Banca de Economii (Savings Bank), who holds also the position of head of department at the National Bank of Moldova (BNM). The employee was detained based on suspicions of committing abuse of office.      

According to data by PCCOCS, the criminal prosecution actions take place within the investigation of the bank fraud file, as regards the management of bank guarantees by BNM for the bank institutions: Commercial Bank Banca de Economii stock company, Commercial Bank Unibank stock company and Commercial Bank Banca Sociala (Social Bank) stock company.

Under the legislation, the abuse of office committed in the interest of a criminal organization is punished with up to 8 years of imprisonment, with the deprivation of the right to hold certain offices or to exercise a certain activity for a period from 10 to 15 years.   Conform legislației, abuzul de serviciu comis în interesul unei organizații criminale se pedepsește cu închisoare de la trei la opt ani, cu privarea de dreptul de a ocupa anumite funcții sau de a exercita o anumită activitate pe un termen de la 10 la 15 ani.

Also today, the National Bank of Moldova informed that it remained open for contributing to investigating the bank fraud from 2014 and, in this respect, BNM reconfirmed its will for a resultative completion of the investigation.

„The Central Bank has been fully cooperating with the criminal prosecution bodies, providing all existing materials, explanations, specialists, etc., at their request, as well as on its initiative. The National Bank relies on an objective and efficient investigation, for the citizens’ benefit,’’ BNM’s press release reads.
