Moldovan writer passed away this morning

Chisinau, 12 March /MOLDPRES/- Poet, prose writer and publicist Nicolae Dabija, winner of the National Prize and several international awards died this morning of Covid-19.


The tragic news was announced by consultant of the Writers' Union of Moldova Titus Știrbu. A few days ago, he had been hospitalized at the Institute of Emergency Medicine in Chisinau.

He was born on 15 July 1948 in Codreni village, Cimișlia district. In 1972 he graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the State University of Moldova.

In the last decade, Nicolae Dabija has published three prose books.

He is the author of over 80 volumes of poetry, prose and essays. He was a deputy in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova (1990-1994, 1998-2001), contributing to the promotion of historical laws, such as the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova, the laws on the Tricolor as a State Flag, on the State Coat of Arms and the State Anthem of the Republic of Moldova.


Nicolae Dabija was awarded the Order of the Republic, the Order of the Star of Romania in the rank of Commander, the Order of Cultural Merit in the rank of Grand Officer, the Grand Prize of the International Poetry Festival in Trieste, the Giacommo Leopardi Prize of the World Poetry Center in Recanati, Umberto Mastroiani International Poetry Prize, offered at Fantana i Liri, Dulce Maria Loynaz Grand Prize of Havana International Poetry Festival etc.


Two years ago, Nicolae Dabija was awarded the Medal and Prize Pjetër Bogdani, the most important literary prize awarded by the Writers' Union of Kosovo, for the volume Psalms of Dachuria (Psalms of Love), translated into Albanian by Baki Ymeri.
