Moldova participates in UN General Assembly on water resources management

Chisinau, 23 March /MOLDPRES/- About 90 high-level representatives of the member states of the United Nations convened in a General Assembly to discuss the effective management of water resources. The even focused on the implementation of the goals set in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Our country was represented at the event by Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ion Perju.

"In September 2015, Moldova together with 192 UN member states adopted the Declaration of the Summit for Sustainable Development to implement the objectives of the 2030 Agenda. Thus, our country will mobilize its efforts to eradicate all forms poverty reduction, combating inequalities and tackling climate change, making sure no one is left behind. The correct and sustainable management of water resources is becoming an increasingly current need and is a priority on the agenda of the Government of the Republic of Moldova ", Ion Perju said.

Water supply is vital for economic development, environmental sustainability and social inclusion of the country and improving living conditions for citizens. Integrating sustainable development objectives into strategic documents is an ongoing process. In this regard, our country has approved all changes to the water supply and sewerage Strategy and has taken important steps towards integrated water resources management.

"In the context in which the Republic of Moldova is relatively limited in water resources compared to other countries in the region, we note the importance of the relationship with neighboring countries, Romania and Ukraine, for the efficient transversal management of the two river basins. At the national level, the connection rate of the population to public water supply and sewerage services is still modest, which is why our country is focusing efforts to strengthen access and achieve sustainable water and sanitation management, " he said.

The Republic of Moldova together with 192 UN member states adopted in September 2015 the Declaration of the Summit for Sustainable Development, through which our country committed itself to implement the objectives of the 2030 Agenda.
