District library from north Moldova district centre to bear name of departed head of National Library

Chisinau, 25 March /MOLDPRES/ - The Briceni district Public Library will bear the name of librarian, writer, PhD in philosophy, the former director of Moldova’s National Library (BNRM), holder of the Order of Honour, Civic Merit medal, Mihai Eminescu medal, Merited Man of Moldova Alexe Rau.   

The Briceni district council has recently taken a decision to this effect, at a request by the district councilors and following an approach submitted by the culture and tourism district department. Under the decision, the name of Alexe Rau was awarded to the library ‘’for the special merits in the development of the librarianship sector in the country.’’  

Alexe Rau was born in the Larga village, Briceni district, on 23 December 1953. In 1975, he graduated from the Librarianship and Bibliography Faculty of the Moldovan State University. Starting from 1976, he temporarily replaced people in more offices and went up on hierarchic stages both at the National Library and the Culture Ministry. Beginning with 1992 till 2015, he held the position of director general of the National Library of Moldova.   

Alexe Rau initiated and contributed to the carrying out, in the conditions of the interdictions imposed by the communist regime, of the Eminesciana Festival (dedicated to poet Mihai Eminescu) (1985-1986). Rau founded the Calendar of the Librarian, which became National Calendar in 2000. Alexe Rau signed more than 200 studies, articles, essays published in collections and specialty periodical  publications from Moldova, Romania, Russia, USA, Austria, France and other countries.     

Alexe Rau was also awarded the National Order of Merit in rank of Commander of Romania. Alexe Rau died in Chisinau on 8 April 2015 and was buried in his native village.
