Chisinau, 26 April /MOLDPRES/- President Maia Sandu conveyed a message today on Day of Remembrance of victims of Chernobyl catastrophe, marked annually on 26 April. The head of state expressed gratitude and respect for the sacrifice and heroism of our fellow citizens, as a result of which hundreds of thousands of lives were saved from the danger of radioactive contamination, the presidential press service has reported.

"Today we commemorate the Chernobyl victims and the tragedy that whole families went through. After the accident, thousands of people sacrificed their health in actions to liquidate the consequences of the catastrophe. More than 3,500 of our fellow citizens were involved in that period to save lives and the environment. Only half of them are still alive today - those who constantly keep alive the memory of their comrades and support the families for whom Chernobyl means dear people who are no longer with them", the message signed by Maia Sandu reads.

"On behalf of the country and on my own behalf, I express my gratitude and respect for the sacrifice and heroism of those days, thanks to which hundreds of thousands of lives were saved from the danger of radioactive contamination," the message said.

"The Chernobyl disaster teaches us a fundamental lesson - a society can overcome collective tragedies only if it works in solidarity for the common good and has institutions that focus on protecting people's lives and the environment. This is what we want to build in the Republic of Moldova - a state that thinks for the good of the people and acts responsibly and transparently for a good life of citizens ", the message reads.
