Moldovan acting foreign affairs minister has meeting with executive director of United Nations Office in Vienna

Chisinau, 27 April /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova’s multilateral cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNOCD) was the subject of discussions between Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Aureliu Ciocoi and the executive director of the UN Office in Vienna, UNOCD Director General Ghada Wally.     

According to the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service, the officials tackled the subject on the promotion of projects in the field of combating the organized crime, recovery of crime assets, fight against corruption, combating the trafficking of drugs and identifying the best practices in the field of fighting the scourge of trafficking of human beings.    

Aureliu Ciocoi said that Moldova fully participated in the mechanism of revising the enforcement of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and protocol to the latter, being in charge also of the convention’s implementation. Also, the acting PM noted that one of the most important projects implemented by the specialized organization had been the programme on control of containers, the extension of which for Moldova was of special importance, in the context of the development of the Giurgiulesti International Port and increasing the number of import, import operations and the ones of transit of goods in containers.    

For her part, Ghada Wally highlighted that UNODC would further provide expertise in the field of drugs’ control, preventing criminality and terrorism, in an integrated way and would back the efforts of Moldova’s authorities in promoting national and international initiatives.   

UNODC was set up in its present form in 2002, being in charge of implementing the UN programmes in the sector. Moldova’s cooperation with UNODC is carried out by the Interior Ministry, Customs Service and specialized agencies.
