Chisinau, 5 May /MOLDPRES/- This year's Europe Day was launched today in online format, with the participation of several ambassadors of the member states of the European Union in the Republic of Moldova. Diplomats said what this day means to them and addressed messages to the citizens of our country.

Head of European Union Delegation to Chisinau Peter Michalko said that Europe Day highlights the values that formed the basis of EU formation and that, for more than 70 years since the Schuman Declaration, guided member states through solidarity and unity. "Even from the earliest days of the pandemic, the European Union has been with the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, just as before, by carrying out several development projects. Together we are united and in solidarity and together we can be stronger ", Peter Michalko said.

For his part, Daniel Ioniţă, Romanian Ambassador to Moldova, said "Europe Day is an event of joy, which emphasizes the principles and values of the European community, the spirit of solidarity that underlies the family of Europe." He said that Romania has been and is always with the Republic of Moldova in aspirations to join the European Union.

Every year, Europe Day (9 May) marks peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the historic day on which the Schuman declaration was made. In a speech in Paris in 1950, then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed the establishment of a new form of political cooperation in Europe that would forever rule out the possibility of a new war between European nations. His vision was to create a European institution that would centralize and manage coal and steel production. A year later, a treaty was signed providing for the creation of such a body. Robert Schuman's proposal is considered to be the cornerstone of the European Union.

For the first time, Europe Day was celebrated in the Republic of Moldova in 2006. However, Europe Day was declared an official holiday in our country by the Parliament on 28 April 2017.

Every year, on Europe Day, in Chisinau and in many other places in the country, special events are organized, except last year, when due to the pandemic, the activities were organized online.

And this year, as the epidemiological situation remains complicated, the actions on the occasion of Europe Day will be mostly virtual. Thus, the EU institutions organize a lot of events before 9 May through which European citizens and not only can learn more about the European Union.
