Chisinau, 9 May /MOLDPRES/ - Acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi today laid flowers at the Eternity Memorial Complex from Moldova, in the memory of the heroes who died for the Motherland’s Independence. Attending the event were also Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanii, ministers, diplomats, veterans of the World War II and their relatives, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.

The acting PM laid flowers at the memorial plaques and the monuments Eternal Fire, Stele of the Moldovan Heroes and the Grieving Mother. Meanwhile, 16 beatings of the metronome and three fires of guns were made by the honour guard.

Aureliu Ciocoi offered congratulations to Moldova on the victory from 9 May 1945 and, on this occasion he reconfirmed the moral compulsoriness to preserve live the memory of those who died in the bloodiest war. The acting PM noted that the 9 May victory had triggered a string of processes which subsequently led to the creation of the European Union.

"This victory was the detonator of the awareness by the European leaders from the post-war period that the only solution to bring peace to Europe, after thousands of years of confrontations and wars, is cooperation and joining the efforts. The Schuman Declaration is a derivative of the Victory Day and of the horrible things of the World War II. Therefore, I believe that there is a direct connection between the Victory Day, which we celebrate and commemorate today and the Europe Day, which also today marks the 71st anniversary of the date of proclamation of the Schuman Declaration,’’ the prime minister said.

The 76th anniversary of the end of the battles in Europe in the Second World War, in the wake of which at least 60 million people were killed, is marked today.
