Moldova might benefit from 15 million dollars to manage drought in southern region

Chisinau, 17 May /MOLDPRES/ - The Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry (MADRM), the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and the Austrian Federal Environment Agency today signed a memorandum of understanding. It provides for the joint elaboration of a project on the management of the drought in southern Moldova and is to be proposed for financing from the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

The sides initiated the joint working out of the project titled, Solutions of adaptation to the climate changes in Moldova’s southern region through adaptation measures based on ecosystem, worth about 15 million dollars. The project’s goal is to reduce the risks related to the climate changes for the vulnerable rural communities from southern Moldova, through the protection and sustainable use of the semi-arid ecosystems.

„The climate changes will have a significant impact on the degradation of the environment, hitting all development sectors of Moldova. Therefore, the memorandum signed provides a basis for the constructive and efficient cooperation between MADRM and development partners, in order to get financial support on behalf of GCF, aimed at preserving the biodiversity and enhancing the resilience of the population vulnerable to the climate changes in Moldova,’’ competent minister Ion Perju said.

For his part, the ADA representative, Gunther Zimmer, said that the ‘’key issue tackled by the project consists in enhancing the impact of the climate changes on the natural ecosystems and the security of water resources from southern Moldova.’’ ‘’The Austrian Development Agency will act as entity accredited for the aforementioned project and will back with 50,000 euros the elaboration of the pre-feasibility study and developing the conceptual note of the project for the Green Climate Fund,’’ Gunther Zimmer noted.

The project’s estimated budget is about 15 million dollars and the implementation period is of about 48 months.
