Italy wins Eurovision Song Contest in 2021

Chisinau, 23 May /MOLDPRES/ - Italy won the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, held in Rotterdam on 22 May evening, and will be the host country for the new edition of the contest. The victory was gained by the Maneskin rock band, with the song, Zitti e buoni, which accumulated the maximal number of points – 524.    

Italy’s representative was the favourite of the betting houses, which showed them the great favourite in the final of the Eurovision 2021. France ranked second with 499 points and Switzerland – third with 432 points. The United Kingdom was on the last position in the ranking, with no vote on behalf of the jury and no one on behalf of audience.     

Twenty six countries competed for the great trophy, including Moldova, represented by Natalia Gordienko with the song Sugar, which ranked 13th, with 115 points. Moldova received most points of the jury – 12 - on behalf of Bulgaria and Russia. Natalia Gordienko got 63 points on behalf of the audience. Moldova gave the maximal number of points – 12 – to Bulgaria, ten to Russia and eight to Greece. 

Contacted by MOLDPRES, the head of the Moldovan delegation in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Vitalie Cojocaru, stressed that the fact that Moldova’s represented had qualified for the final of Eurovision 2021 already represented a victory.  

Artists from 39 states participated in Eurovision this year. Those 20 participants selected at the two semifinals, the representatives of the host country, as well as of the five foundation countries – France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom – sang in the final.    

Moldova has been taking part in Eurovision since 2005. In that year, Moldova, which was represented by the Zdob și Zdub band, ranked sixth. In 2017, the SunStroke Project got the best result for the country, ranking third at the contest.
