Moldova reduced greenhouse gas emissions by about 70% compared to 1990

Chisinau, 26 May /MOLDPRES/- The Republic of Moldova has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by about 70% compared to 1990, exceeding by 4% commitments under the Paris Agreement, set in the targets for 2020. The announcement was made by the Ministry Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment (MADRM) in a profile forum recently held by the United Nations Development Program, in partnership with the Embassies of the United Kingdom and Italy.

According to MADRM, the most significant reductions in GHG emissions were recorded in agriculture, exceeding by 26% the targets for 2020, and the electricity and heat production sector, exceeding the targets by 19%. There are also significant increases in the residential sector, transport and industrial processes.

Moldova was committed to unconditionally reduce GHG emissions by 70% by 2030, compared to 1990, in order to contribute to the Paris Agreement. This is the most important climate agreement, which provides for global warming to be kept well below 2 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial period.

Our country is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, despite having a minor contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. The annual losses caused by climate change amount to 2.13% of the Gross Domestic Product, and in the next period, up to 40 thousand deaths per year could be caused by extreme temperatures.
