Moldovan diplomacy head has meeting with U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state

Chisinau, 2 June /MOLDPRES/ - The Moldovan diplomacy head, Aureliu Ciocoi, today received U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs George P. Kent, on a working visit to Moldova, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported. 

The officials discussed the reconfirmation of the support by the U.S. authorities of the democratic processes in Moldova, development and strengthening of the Moldovan-American relations in diverse sectors of mutual interest within the strategic dialogue, the pandemic crisis, situation in the Eastern Europe’s region, as well as the developments in the Transnistrian file.

At the meeting, the acting foreign affairs and European integration minister stressed the importance of giving a concrete dimension to the Moldova-USA relations both in terms of the political dialogue and of the commercial and economic cooperation, in the sector of security and combating the hybrid threats.   

Aureliu Ciocoi highlighted the importance of the American assistance in ensuring a continuous process of Moldova’s modernization, backing the economic activity, consolidating the democratic institutions, fight against corruption, advancement of the justice reform, improvement of the investment climate, as well as the prospects for development and strengthening of the Moldova-USA Strategic Dialogue through concrete actions.   

Then Moldovan diplomat emphasized the importance of setting up joint topic-related working groups for turning to account the current cooperation potential.   

The interlocutors tackled also the present stage of the process of negotiations on the Transnistrian conflict settlement, as well as the steps due to be undertaken on the next period. 

Aureliu Ciocoi appreciated the American side’s willingness to support the joint efforts for identifying a comprehensive and viable solution to the Transnistrian problem, based on the observance of Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within the internationally recognized borders.  

At the same time, the officials exchanged opinions on the process of withdrawal of the foreign troops and ammunitions from Moldova. The sides stressed the need to maintain a continuous and transparent dialogue both with the concerned sides and within the competent international organizations for the effective resumption of this process.   

The officials also exchanged opinions on the regional and security situation, as well as Moldova’s European integration process. 

In the end, Aureliu Ciocoi and George Kent discussed the subject of the snap parliamentary elections due this summer, the Moldovan authorities’ efforts for the good carrying out of the ballot and ensuring a democratic, free and transparent electoral process.
