Chisinau, 4 June /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today participated in an online conference titled, Economic recovery in post-pandemic: realities and prospects, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM), the presidential press service has reported.

In a speech given on this occasion, the head of state said that Moldova’s banking sector, along with the National Bank, had gone through more difficult stages, with system problems and that the darkest period for BNM was the one when the billion was stolen. ‘’As state, we must make sure that such frauds will not be repeated and the National Bank of Moldova should be a true regulator in the sector,’’ Maia Sandu said.

The Moldovan president stressed that, in the current context of economic crisis, the expectations from the National Bank are even higher. They deal with the firm interventions which should help small or big businesses resist, as well as the needy people who lost their jobs. In fact, more accessible financing and financial packages created for people are necessary for the economic recovery, as well as a joint effort which, along with the support provided by the development partners, should mobilize also the domestic resources, as well as the tens of billions of lei existing in the commercial banks.

„We need openness and involvement on behalf of the banking institutions from Moldova; we want the banks’ participation in national infrastructure projects, in projects at the level of cities and communities,’’ Maia Sandu also said. At the same time, the head of state noted that, in this context too, priority remained the justice reform and the anticorruption measures, as elements which can guarantee the independence and reliability of such a key institution for the state as the National Bank. ‘’It should be and I hope that there is support and consensus for the major reforms which we should carry out in the next months and the years to come,’’ Maia Sandu added.
