Departed Moldovan writer would have turned 80

Chisinau, 22 June /MOLDPRES/ - Prose writer, PhD in biological sciences, lawmaker in the first parliament of Moldova Lidia Istrati would have turned 80 today.

Lidia Istrati was born in the Sofia village, northern Drochia district, in 1941. She studied at the Chisinau-based Agricultural Institute (presently the State Agrarian University of Moldova), which she graduated in 1962. Istrati continued her training for doctor’s degree at the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM). In 1971, she got the title of PhD in biology. After finishing the institute, Lidia Istrati worked as teacher in the Bujor village, central Hancesti district, and then as editor and head of editorial office at the Stiinta publishing house, director of the Dimitrie Cantemir Republican Museum of Literature (1988-1990). She was MP in two legislative periods during 1990-1997.    

Lidia Istrati debuted in literature with a volume of short stories titled Nica in 1978.

According to literary critics, the prose of Lidia Istrati was written under the sign of ethic things, the tough truth. Having a rare gift of narrator, the prose writer recovered through document the legendary figure of Stephen the Great, who became the symbol of the national revival.  

In the end of 1990s till her dramatic death, Lidia Istrati was an ardent struggler for the awakening and strengthening of the national conscience. She had an active presence in the public life. Istrati struggled against corruption and mafia. She was head of the Christian Democratic League of Women from Moldova. Starting from 1994, Istrati represented the Bloc of Peasants and Intellectuals in parliament. Lidia Istrati signed the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova in 1991. She was awarded the Labour Glory Order (1996) and the Order of the Republic posthumously in 2010.  A memorial plaque was set on the façade of the building where she lived in 2017.     

Lidia Istrati died in Chisinau on 25 April 1997.
