Progress of project on Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve assessed

Chisinau, 8 July /MOLDPRES/- Two essential documents for improving habitat conditions, for informing local actors about the value of the protected area and climate change trends in Prutul de Jos (Lower Prut) Reserve were presented at the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, at yesterday's meeting of the Supervisory Committee of the Project -Measures to adapt to climate change in the Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve, aimed at assessing progress in 2019-2021 implementation period.

The first document is Climate Vulnerability Assessment of the Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve. The proposed methodological approach. 

The second document includes the study Main findings and proposed adaptation measures, which comprises indicators of the current assessment on climate vulnerability of the Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve.

"Vulnerability assessment is an important tool for developing climate change adaptation strategies, in particular for setting management and planning priorities, as well as for more efficient management of resources".

“It aims to increase the probability of achieving conservation goals (protection of species or populations, ensuring the sustainability of specific natural resources or ecosystem services). Climate vulnerability assessment is perceived as a tool to inform and facilitate the further direction of interventions in the area, in order to increase the climate resilience of the biosphere reserve and its communities ", according to the implementation team.

The project is implemented by EcoContact and Cahul Ecological Consulting Center, with the financial support of the Austrian Development Agency.

The project aims at ensuring the functionality of the Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve by improving the conditions for its protection, biodiversity conservation measures and by increasing the capacity of the community to adapt to climate change.
