Chisinau, 18 August /MOLDPRES/- The initiation of negotiations on the draft Agreement on the construction of the bridge, which will link the locality of Ungheni in Romania with Ungheni in the Republic of Moldova was approved today by the Parliament's Foreign Policy and European Integration Commission.

The agreement would be signed between the Governments of Romania and the Republic of Moldova on technical, financial, legal and organizational issues related to the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of the border road bridge between the two states over the Prut River.

According to the project, the construction of the bridge will ensure the connection of the road network through the western part of Moldova, which will support the needs of citizens for mobility and will facilitate trade on the domestic markets of the two countries and the international one. At the same time, it will increase the role that the Republic of Moldova has as a link between the states of the European Union and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The financing for the technical project of the objective will be provided by the Romanian Government, including the environmental impact assessment, as well as the construction of the bridge itself and the construction of the related infrastructure on its territory. The Republic of Moldova would ensure the assessment of the environmental impact on its territory, as well as the financing for the construction of the related road infrastructure.

The total cost of the works is about 40 million euros. The Republic of Moldova would allocate about 7 million euros, including for the works at the crossing point.
