Special commission approves Regulation on selection of candidates for office of Ombudsman in Moldova

Chisinau, 21 August /MOLDPRES/ - The special commission for the selection of candidates for the office of Ombudsman, at a 20 August meeting, approved the Regulation on the contest’s organization and carting out. The contest will be held based on the principles of transparency, fairness and open competition.
Under the document, the candidate for the position of Ombudsman should meet more conditions, among which the length of service of at least ten years and a well-known activity in the sector of protection and promotion of human rights. Also, the candidate must not have, in the last ten years, negative results in terms of professional integrity.
The regulation approved sees that the concerned contest will be organized in two stages: submitting the file and the interview. Experts of public or international institutions from the human rights field and civil society’s representatives can participate in the second exam, the interview.
The special commission members will assess the candidates for the office of Ombudsman and the first two candidates who got the largest number of points will be introduced to parliament. The candidate getting the vote of the majority of the elected MPs will be appointed as Ombudsman.
On 4 February 2021, Moldova’s parliament ceased the mandate of the Ombudsman before term and declared the position vacant.
