Moldovan president addresses message on Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes

Chisinau, 23 August /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu has addressed a message on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, the presidential press service has reported.  

„Today is the Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, established by the government which I was leading in August 2019. Moldova thus joined a decision by the European Parliament from 2008, which declared the date of 23 August, when the Soviet Union and the Nazi Germany signed the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact – as Europe-wide Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes,’’ President Maia Sandu said.     

In her message, the head of state points out that, on this day, we remember the victims of the Stalinist deportations and the ones of the Nazi concentration camps, those who suffered in the wake of the political repressions, died during the organized famine or were exterminated for religious or race reasons. It is about tens of millions of people deprived of freedom, tortured and killed only for the fact that they found themselves hostages of ideologies for which the human life had no value.   

„For such tragedies not to be repeated, we need democracy and rule of law state, which is in the service of the citizens and prevents the politicians from turning into tyrants. And I want this memory day to unite and motivate us to edify a society in which the human life is the supreme value,’’ the Moldovan president also said in her message addressed on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes.
