Moldovan academician would have turned 85 years

Chisinau, 30 August /MOLDPRES/ - Biologist, PhD in biology, university professor, scientific researcher, investor, titular member of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (ASM) Simion Toma would have turned 85 years today.  

Simion Toma was born in the Marzaci village, central Orhei district, on 30 August 1936. He graduated from the Agronomy Faculty of the Chisinau-based Agricultural Institute in 1959. He became PhD in agricultural sciences in 1973 and university professor in 1985. After the faculty’s graduation, Toma worked as assistant, senior lecturer, acting professor at the department of agro-chemistry of this institution (1959-1973), then as director and head of laboratory of the Chisinau Branch of the Central Institute of Agro-chemical Service from the USSR (1973-1978), director of the Institute of Plants’ Physiology at ASM (1978-2005).      

According to the National Calendar, Simion Toma held important offices at Moldova’s Academy of Sciences: academician manager of the section of biological sciences (1980-86); deputy president of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (1986-90), academician manager of the agricultural sciences section at ASM (as of 2005). 

The findings of his scientific researches were presented at numerous congresses, conferences and symposiums in USA, France, Russia, Greece, Switzerland, Italy, Romania, Finland, Ukraine, Uzbekistan,  Estonia and were awarded over 50 medals at international and national exhibitions.    

Toma was awarded the title of merited man of Moldova, the Order Red Labour Flag, two orders Badge of Honour, medal Academician N.I Vavilov, golden medal Henri Coanda (Romania) and the golden medal OMPI (Geneva). He is also laureate of numerous prizes in the science field.  

Simion Toma died in Chisinau on 11 November 2015.
