Moldovan university professor, writer would have turned 80

Chisinau, 24 September /MOLDPRES/ - A university professor, Victor Banaru, would have turned 80 today.  

Victor Banaru was born in the commune Grinauti-Raia, Hotin district, presently Ocnita district, on 24 September 1  941. In 1959, he became student at the French and German section of the Alecu Russo Pedagogical Institute from Balti. In 1962, Banaru was sent to continue his education at the V. Lenin University from Moscow, which he graduated with a merit diploma in 1965.    

During March 1964-March 1965, he worked as translator in the Republic of Guinea, Africa. As of 1966, Banaru worked at the department of French philology of the Moldovan State University (USM), where he began working as assistant professor, and then continued as doctoral candidate, lecturer and university professor. In 1995, he was re-elected as director of the department for the third mandate and worked there till his death.

In 1971, Victor Banaru maintained his doctor’s thesis in Romanic philology and in 1981 – the thesis of PhD in general linguistics. He was member of the council specialized in the maintaining of theses of doctor of the institute of Foreign Languages from Minsk and the council specialized in the maintaining of theses of doctor of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (ASM). He delivered numerous lectures, presented scientific reports at conferences and symposiums held at the universities from Paris, Lausanne, Moscow, Kalinin, Kiev, Sankt-Petersburg, Samarkand, Bukhara, Baku, Erevan, Tbilisi, Academy of Sciences from Moscow, Grenoble, Iasi, Cluj, Balti.

Victor Banaru is author is more than 120 publications. He translated 14 books of folklore and literary works from Romanian into French. In 1994, his book of short stories, Taste of Belladonna, appeared.    

He was member of the Moldovan Journalists’ Union, Association of Science People from Moldova, member of the Moldovan Writers’ Union and Writers’ Union from Romania. Victor Banaru died in the wake of a traffic accident on 8 December 1997.
