Grigore Vieru International Poetry Festival inaugurated in Chisinau

Chisinau, 24 September /MOLDPRES/ - The 13th edition of the International Poetry Festival Grigore Vieru was inaugurated today in Chisinau with flowers and a poetry recital at the bust of departed poet on the Alley of Classics in the Public Garden Stefan cel Mare. On September 22-23, the festival took place in Iasi.


Director of the Romanian Cultural Institute Mihai Eminescu in Chisinau, academician Valeriu Matei said that the current edition of the festival is a significant one. "We, the organizers, set out to maintain the festival at a high artistic, aesthetic and value level," said the director of ICR Chisinau. According to the poet Ion Hadârcă, Grigore Vieru is part of our cultural treasure and will remain so forever.

A recital was held near the poet's bust by the students of the "Grigore Vieru" Gymnasium from Chisinau.


Grigore Vieru was born on February 14, 1935 in the village of Pererata, Briceni district.

He passed away on January 18, 2009 following a car accident.

Grigore Vieru was decorated post-mortem with the National Order "Star of Romania" in the rank of Grand Cross. Currently, several schools in the Republic of Moldova, a boulevard in the capital and a street in Iasi, Romania, bear his name.
