Chisinau, 28 September /MOLDPRES/ - The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has asked the parliament to quicker supply the number of the members of the electoral authority, given that the legal term for the election of CEC’s deputy head and secretary expires on 1 October.

According to a press release by the central electoral authority, ‘’on 16 September, the parliament confirmed the nominal composition of CEC, made up of six persons, out of the nine ones, provided for by the law. Thus, another three members put forward by the parliament’s opposition are to be confirmed by the MPs. On 17 September, the already confirmed members organized a meeting, during which Angela Caraman was elected as CEC head. The election of the head was prompted by the need to ensure the continuity of the Commission’s work, including in the context of the organization of the new local polls due on 21 November 2021, for reasons that the mandate of the CEC’s previous composition expired on 15 September this year.’’

The central electoral authority noted that the participants in the 17 September meeting had postponed the subjects on the election of the CEC deputy head and secretary for a period of 15 days at the latest, provided for in the Electoral Code. ‘’The postponing of the two subjects was decided, on the one hand, to allow the parliament to confirm those three members, for the full composition and on the other hand, the postponing was made, so that the CEC’s entire composition participates in the procedure of election of the deputy head and secretary of the Commission, in order to ensure the right to elect and be elected for the members who have not been confirmed for the time being,’’ the CEC press release reads.
