22,872 people died from heart disease last year

Chisinau, 29 September /MOLDPRES/- Last year, in the Republic of Moldova, 22,872 people died due to cardiovascular diseases, compared to 21,512 deaths, in 2019. The data were made public by the Ministry of Health in the context of marking World Heart Day.

It aims at raising public awareness of the risks of cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke.

The event was launched at the initiative of the World Heart Federation, being the largest platform specialized in protecting heart health in the world. This year, the motto of this day is "Use your heart to connect", each member of society being urged to use their knowledge, compassion and influence to ensure a heart-healthy life.

According to WHO data, cardiovascular disease causes 18.6 million deaths each year. They can occur from several causes, such as tobacco and alcohol use, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, to air pollution or cardiac amyloidosis. Worldwide, around 520 million people suffer from cardiovascular disease.

In the Republic of Moldova, cardiovascular diseases rank first in the ranking of causes of death. During 2020, 22,872 people died in our country due to cardiovascular diseases, compared to 21,512 deaths in 2019.
