Chisinau, 13 October /MOLDPRES/ - The EcoDigital public association has informed about the launch of a national campaign titled, Moldova recycles electric and electronic waste, due to be carried out on 14 October – 14 November.

Through the launch of the campaign, the Association, which implements the project, We recycle electric and electronic waste and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, this year joins the International E-waste Day, marked on 14 October. The action’s goal is to involve the country’s residents, institutions in: collection and delivery of electric and electronic waste accumulated by authorized operators (Moldrec or EcoREcycling), partners of the project; dissemination of relevant information and data to stimulate a participatory spirit and a rational consumption among Moldova’s residents.

Any of the public, private or education institutions, which will observe the provisions of the regulation of the campaign, by filling in a registration form, can join the campaign, along with the project’s beneficiary institutions. The most active ambassadors of the E-Recycling, who will be awarded by the project’s implementers and partners, will be nominated at the end of the campaign.

According to data by the United Nations Organization, this year, each person produces, on average, 7.6 kg of electric and electronic waste, which means that 57.4 million tons will be generated all over the world. Only 17.4 per cent of this e-waste, which contains a mixture of harmful substances and precious materials, will be registered as collected, treated and recycled properly; the rest, unfortunately, is managed improperly through elimination in combination with the household waste or thrown in banned places. This means also losses of resources, which might be reintroduced in a new economic circulation. For instance, according to data by WEEE Forum, by the recycling of each one million of mobile phones, 16,000 kg of copper, 350 kg of silver, 24 kg of gold and 14 kg of palladium might be recovered.

The project, We recycle electric and electronic waste and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, is implemented by the EcoDigital public association, with financial support of the Small Grants funds programme of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). It is carried out by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the public association, Association for Turning to Account Waste (AVD), Ecology College, MoldRec and EcoRecycling. Through this project, launched in March 2021, decision-makers managed to extend the network of collection points both in the Chisinau city and in Moldova’s districts. As many as 190 collection points are presently available on the map of the updated collection points.
