Departed Moldovan composer would have turned 90

Chisinau, 15 October /MOLDPRES/ - Composer, orchestra conductor, university professor Vladimir Rotaru would have turned 90 years today.  

Vladimir Rotaru was born in the Sculeni village, Ungheni district, in 1931. He graduated from the G. Musicescu State Conservatoire (flute specialty) from Chisinau in 1956. Rotaru improved his mastership of singing at flute at the Pyotr Tchaikovsky Conservatoire from Moscow in 1974.  

Vladimir Rotaru started his musical career as flute player in the Orchestra of the Chisinau-based Opera and Ballet Theatre (1955-1960). He was then assistant of conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic from Chisinau (1960-1962); conductor of the Orchestra of the JOC Ensemble of Folk Dances (1962-1971). Starting from 1971, he worked at the Chisinau-based Music, Theatre and Fine Arts Academy. In 1974-76, Rotaru worked as artistic conductor of the Symphony Orchestra and the Light Music Orchestra of the Teleradio Moldova State Company.      

In 1971, Rotaru’s first cycle from 7 works for piano appeared. He recorded about 100 compositions of composers from different countries (1974-1976).   

The recordings from the works of 16 Moldovan composers, sung by the orchestras conducted by Vladimir Rotaru, were inserted in a disc issued by the Melodia Firm from Moscow.   

In 1967, Rotaru was awarded the honorific title of Merited Artist and in 1993 he became laureate of the National Prize.  

Vladimir Rotaru passed away in Chisinau in 2007.
