Number of COVID-19 cases increasing - health ministry says

Chisinau, 20 October /MOLDPRES/- Last week, 9,902 cases of COVID-19 were registered. The number of deaths caused by the new coronavirus has also increased by more than 27 percent, and about 90 percent of intensive care beds are already full. The data were made public today by the leadership of the Ministry of Health.

Secretary of State Svetlana Nicolaescu said that last week, the number of cases in some localities exceeded the figures representing the Red Code. "We are approaching the record number of COVID-19 cases in March. And mortality increased, with 217 deaths, 27 percent more than in the previous week, "said Nicolaescu.

She added that the epicenter of the epidemic remains the municipalities of Chisinau and Balti. The districts of Sângerei, Anenii Noi, Basarabeasca and Glodeni were also placed under the Red Code.

The number of patients in serious condition is also increasing. More than 300 patients are hospitalized in the intensive care units, and another 46 are intubated. "More than 90 percent of ATI's beds are already full. We still have about 1000 beds that can be mobilized for the treatment of COVID-19 patients, but this would mean a significant burden on the medical workers and the entire medical system ", the official said.

Since the start of the vaccination campaign against COVID-19, 1,467,572 doses have been administered, with 24% vaccine coverage.
