Council of Europe might monitor process of local public authorities' decentralization in Moldova

Chisinau, 27 October /MOLDPRES/ - The Chisinau general mayor, Ion Ceban, has participated in the works of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, held in Strasbourg, in his capacity of deputy head of the Congress of Local Public Authorities from Moldova.    

In his speech given in Strasbourg, Ceban referred to the importance of the decentralization and development of the local public authorities as foremost factor of attractiveness for investors. According to the Chisinau mayor, ‘’the decentralization and consolidation of the local democracy represents one of the essential instruments in the improvement of the situation, enhancing the quality of services and the living standards and hence – reduction of the migration and even prompting the citizens to return home.’’ ‘’The sustainable economic development and the creation of new jobs is closely connected to the process of real financial decentralization, to the increase in the capacities of the local budgets in everything which means ensuring an infrastructure and the conditions of work necessary for the business environment,’’ Ceban said.  

In the context, the Chisinau delegation welcomed the signing by the Moldovan government’s representatives and the Congress of Local Public Authorities of the roadmap on the implementation of the recommendation No 436 from 2019 in the sector of strengthening the democracy and local autonomy in Moldova.   

At the same time, Ion Ceban asked the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe to monitor the implementation of the commitments taken by the national authorities as to the decentralization of the local public authorities.
