Moldovan-Ukrainian commission for use, protection of Dniester river basin meets in Chisinau

Chisinau, 29 October /MOLDPRES/- After a two-year break, the Moldovan-Ukrainian commission on stable use and protection of the Dniester river basin convened in a new meeting. The event, held on 28-29 October is attended by members of the Commission - representatives of central public authorities from the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, development partners, experts in water resources management and representatives of civil society.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Environment Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov said that one of the priorities of the Moldovan government is to cooperate with neighboring countries to maintain water flow and reduce any impact on the Dniester and Prut rivers, given that the well-being and health of the population, as well as environmental and economic conditions, depend to a large extent on these transboundary rivers.

„The Republic of Moldova has adopted and implemented the principle of water resources management basin and is in the first stage of implementing the management plans of the river basin, including the Dniester basin. The need for concerted action and cooperation between Moldova and Ukraine is necessary to achieve all the objectives and opportunities for the implementation of these plans. In this sense, the sustainable management of the Dniester river basin, especially in a cross-border context, remains a priority for the new Government, and its implementation measures have been included in the Executive Action Plan for 2021-2022 ", the official said.

Iordanov reaffirmed our country's commitment to effective cooperation, constructive dialogue and ensuring coherence in promoting the policy of cross-border cooperation in the field of water resources management and protection of transboundary waters of the Republic of Moldova.

Discussions on the first day of the meeting referred to priority issues related to the protection of the Dniester, the results of the work of the Commission working groups, the presentation of results of technical assistance projects, including the Social and Environmental Impact Study of the Dniester Hydropower Complex (CHN). 

At the same time, some aspects of the draft Rules for the operation of the CHN, other current issues of the Dniester basin were discussed. "Strengthening cooperation in the field of sustainable use of the Dniester river basin is one of the main objectives of the Moldovan-Ukrainian Commission meeting," according to the Ministry of Environment.

The Commission is working under the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on cooperation in protection and sustainable development of the Dniester River Basin, signed in Rome in 2012.
