Chisinau, 8 November /MOLDPRES/ - Three new special vehicles for intervention in fires and related equipment today were provided to community stations of voluntary firemen and rescuers from the settlements Baimaclia, Parlita and Sarateni, which will serve almost 80,000 residents.

Attending the event in the donation of the special vehicles were Interior Minister Ana Revenco and representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Moldova.

The special vehicles and the equipment for firemen were purchased with the financial assistance of the Austrian Development Agency within the project, Disaster and Climate Risk Reduction in Moldova, implemented by UNDP.

Ana Revenco said that this project would contribute to the government’s efforts of developing rural settlements through enhancing the level of strengthening the service of rescuers and firemen in the rural sector on the first line. The programme is meant to consolidate the cooperation with the first-level local public administration for a common cause and namely enhancing the level of citizens’ security, the minister said.

„The successful fulfillment of the intervention missions depends, to a great extent, on the level of endowment of the firemen with equipment meant to ensure both their protection and the one of the communities in danger. Namely for this reason, I am firmly sure that the today’s donation is quite necessary for the country’s settlements and will give the voluntary firemen possibility to provide prompt and qualitative services in emergency situations and the most important thing, to save human rights in their communities,'' the head of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, Mihail Harabagiu, said.

The technology units with a capacity of 1,600 litres each will be able to be used both to extinguish fires and in case of other emergency situations, even in the settlements with hardly accessible roads. The special vehicles are endowed with hydraulic equipment, advanced pumps and are worth about 225,000 euros in all.

Also with the financial assistance on behalf of Austria, within the UNDP project Disaster and Climate Risk Reduction in Moldova, voluntary firemen and rescuers from the three community stations of the district Cantemir, Ungheni and Leova will be instructed on how to intervene in case of fire with equipment and special vehicles and how to ensure people’s protection in case of emergency situations.
