Parliament launches competition to select candidates for membership of European Committee for Prevention of Torture

Chisinau, 15 November /MOLDPRES/-  The special committee for selecting candidates for membership of the European Committee for Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) today launched the competition for the selection of candidates for membership. Those interested can submit applications by November 23.

According to the parliament's press service, people who are interested in this contest can submit the file in person, by mail or by e-mail until November 23. Subsequently, the Special Commission will draw up a list of candidates to be invited to the interview. Following the examination of the files and the holding of the interview, a list of three nominations will be drawn up and forwarded to the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The Republic of Moldova has a representative in the CPT, who is elected by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, with an absolute majority of votes, from a list of candidates drawn up by the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

According to the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, members of the CPT are elected from well-known personalities, recognized for their competence in the field of human rights or who have professional experience in the fields covered by the Convention. At the same time, they must have a thorough knowledge of one of the official languages ​​of the Council of Europe (English or French).

The role of the CPT representative is to carry out visits to places of detention to examine the treatment of persons deprived of their liberty and, where appropriate, to make recommendations to states.
