Chisinau, 16 November /MOLDPRES/- Mihai Eminescu Gymnasium in Cantemir is the only public institution in the Republic of Moldova that with the financial support of the European Union has a biomass thermal power plant that uses vegetable waste provided by winemakers in the region.

The innovative example in the locality is part of the priorities promoted at European level, through the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), which this year takes place with the motto -Towards 2030: reshaping the European energy system.

"The successful completion of this project is another important example of effective cooperation between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova. The tangible results of the project clearly demonstrate that there are several common benefits of the green transition. These mean reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions, increased comfort for building users and improved livelihoods, leading to better energy security. Energy efficiency is a priority for EU assistance and is part of the flagship initiatives of the Economic and Investment Plan for Moldova, "said Gintautas Baranauskas, a representative of the European Union Delegation to Chisinau.

The innovative components were made in three other institutions in the city of Cantemir - in two kindergartens and in high school. The four educational institutions have already registered energy savings of about 60%, money that can be redirected to other needs. Thanks to the European Union, the annual monetary savings in the city of Cantemir represent 91.817 euros or 15% of the total annual budget of the city.

"Eight years ago, we made a commitment to reduce the level of CO2 emissions by 20%, becoming signatories to the European initiative Covenant of Mayors. We have applied European standards and have been ambitious in diversifying energy types. Today, our city applies ecologically intelligent solutions, which are enjoyed by all inhabitants ", mayor of Cantemir Roman Ciubaciuc said.

The project Thermal Rehabilitation of Educational Buildings in Cantemir is estimated at 951,712 euros, of which 674,240 euros is a grant provided by the European Union, and 277,473 euros was the national and local contribution through the Energy Efficiency Agency, Cantemir District Council, Global Environment Facility. These investments contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions by 699 tons / year, which represents 84% less CO2 at the level of educational institutions. The city of Cantemir, with about five thousand inhabitants, acceded in 2013 to the EU initiative of the Covenant of Mayors on Climate and Energy and developed an Action Plan on Sustainable Energy.
