Presidents of Moldova, Romania discuss re-launch of more projects of common interest for two countries' citizens

Chisinau, 23 November /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today had a meeting with Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis, in the beginning of an official visit to Bucharest, the presidential press service has reported.

The two presidents discussed at the Cotroceni Palace, both in the face-to-face format, and with the participation of official delegations, the advancement of the bilateral relations and the re-launch of more projects of interest for the citizens of Moldova and Romania.   

„We talked about the way Romania can support our agenda of transformation and I  encouraged Romanian investors to come to Moldova. We discussed the bilateral cooperation on strategic projects of energy interconnection and development of the transport infrastructure, programmes in the education and culture sectors and the strengthening of the bilateral commercial relations,’’ Maia Sandu said.   

President Maia Sandu thanked President Iohannis, on behalf of Moldova’s citizens, for support, for the generous assistance provided to the country in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, including the donation of more than 500,000 doses of vaccine, which allowed the Moldovan authorities to save thousands of lives. The head of state expressed gratitude for the donation of diesel, provided to back Moldovan farmers hit by the drought, as well as for the crude oil provided to Moldova during the gas crisis of this autumn.    

According to President Maia Sandu, Romania is the principal economic partner of Moldova, an important supporter of Moldova’s democratic development. ‘’A common history and language, as well as close friendship relations connects us to Romania. We lay great value on this special relation and we want it to develop in continuation equally productively, in the interest of our countries’ citizens,’’ the head of state noted.     

In the end of the discussions, the foreign affairs ministers of Moldova and Romania signed the roadmap on the priority sectors of cooperation between Moldova and Romania. The document reconfirms the commitment to work together for Moldova’s European integration – the only way which can ensure the economic and social development of Moldova for the benefit of its citizens.

After the meeting, Presidents Maia Sandu and Klaus Iohannis gave a joint news briefing.  

Also today, Maia Sandu laid a wreath of flowers at the Monument, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, during a military ceremonial. Subsequently, she signed in the Monument’s Book of Honour.     

President Maia Sandu is on an official visit to Bucharest, at an invitation by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis. In Bucharest, the head of state is accompanied by Secretary General of the President Cristina Gherasimov, adviser for public communication Sorina Stefarta, Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu, Education Minister Anatolie Topala, and nominated Ambassador of Moldova to Romania Victor Chirila.
