Chisinau, 26 November /MOLDPRES/ - The Embassy of Ukraine in Moldova, Community of Ukrainians and Community of Ukrainian Women from Moldova, as well as the Petru Movila Community of Ukrainians from Chisinau have carried out more actions dedicated to the memory of the victims of Holodomor – a famine organized by the Soviet authorities from Ukraine (in 1932-33 and 1946-47) and on the present territory of Moldova (1946-47).

At an online conference, representatives of the academic sector from the two countries recalled the tragic events, which led to the death of millions of innocent people. Also, a ceremony of commemorating the victims of Holodomor titled, Light a Candle, was organized in Chisinau.

”Although some people believe that Holodomor was forgotten and it no longer makes sense to stir up in the collective memory those tragic events, which occurred in a state which no longer exists, in my opinion, it is right to bring the Holodomor to the forefront, just as the Holocaust, which are crimes against the mankind and have no limitation period. I want to thank all those who commemorate the victims of the atrocities committed by the Soviet authorities of the 30s-40s of the last century. I hope that the list of states which recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide to increase significantly,’’ Ambassador of Ukraine to Moldova Marko Shevchenko said.

In 1921, 100 years are marked since the first organized famine in Ukraine, 88 years – since the starting of Holodomor and 75 years - since the beginning of the artificial mass famine in 1946-47 in Ukraine and in the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic.  Holodomor (killing by starvation) was a complex mechanism enforced by the Soviet Union for starting one of the greatest atrocities in the 20th century, of destroying, through starvation, a number of more than 4.5 million people, according to official data. The action was recognized as genocide at the world level by more states, including the USA and Canada. A number of 63 countries backed at the UN the introduction of the term of Holodomor in the international political dictionary.
