Chisinau, 6 December /MOLDPRES/ - The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Moldova today organized an interactive lecture about the importance of the soil and how can it be protected for pupils of the sixth form of the Chisinau-based Gheorghe Asachi Theoretical Lyceum.

The lecture organized by FAO Moldova was moderated by journalist Sorina Obreja and expert in agriculture Anatolie Fala. During the lecture, the children drew, spoke about the importance of the soil and microorganisms living in it and told about their experience of planting trees in grandparents’ gardens.

The public lecture about the soil is an activity carried out within a project titled, Creation of a friendly environment of policies for the integrated management of natural resources and implementation of an integrated approach, in order to achieve the neutrality of degradation of lands in Moldova. The project is carried out by FAO Moldova, with the financial support of the Global Environment Facility. The project is the first of its kind to tackle the issue of lands’ degradation and is meant to create a friendly environment for achieving the neutrality of lands’ degradation in 32 rural settlements.

The soils’ degradation negatively hits the quality of life of all people, including children, and therefore, FAO Moldova is set to contribute to the enhancement of the young people’s awareness about the environment. During the project in 2020-2023, its organizers intend to carry out more public lectures in the general education institutions from Chisinau, as well as from rural settlements about the importance of the soil and how its biodiversity can be protected. The project has a value of over 1 million 600,000 dollars, through which demonstrative plots of land will be created in 32 districts of the districts of Orhei, Rezina and Soldanesti, with a number of about 140,000 residents.

In December 2013, the 68th UN general Assembly ruled that, starting from 2014, the World Soil Day should be marked annually on 5 December. The date was chosen in the honour of the former king of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej (1946-2016), who celebrated his birthday on this day and who militated for a soil day marked globally.
