Monument in memory of Chernobyl accident's victims to be constructed in south Moldova city

Chisinau, 22 December /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet members, at a today’s meeting, voted for the setting up of a monument in the memory of the participants in the Chernobyl accident relief works in the south Taraclia city.   

Under the government decision, the cabinet members approved, at a proposal by the Culture Ministry, presented based on a decision by the Taraclia city council, the foundation in the Taraclia city of a monument in the memory of the participants in the Chernobyl accident relief works.   

The monument will be built according to a project approved by the Culture Ministry. ‘’The expenses for the working out of the project documents, carrying out, construction of the monument and the arrangement of the adjacent area will be covered from donations, sponsorships and other sources which are not banned by the normative framework,’’ the cabinet decision reads.  

The reactor No 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant from Ukraine exploded on 26 April 1986 and subsequently, to keep the radiation level under control, a sarcophagus was constructed over the reactor hit. Official data shows that more than 3,500 citizens of Moldova, of whom 3,000 reservists and 231 officers mobilized by military commissariats, 70 Interior Ministry employees and 500 civilians, participated in the Chernobyl accident relief works.
