Best pupils, teachers awarded prizes at 2021 Gala of Olympiads' Winners

Chisinau, 23 December /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita, along with Education and Research Minister Anatolie Topala, today awarded prizes to 33 pupils who had achieved outstanding results at the regional and international Olympiads and contests held during 2021. Those 33 teachers who trained Moldova’s Olympic teams benefited from prizes and diplomas as well. The overall value of prizes provided to pupils and teachers is 620,000 lei, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.     

Natalia Gavrilita congratulated the pupils and teachers who had won medals at Olympiads, noting that that the results achieved by them were quite important for the education system and the entire country. ‘’The education system of Moldova, despite more criticism and more material shortage, is a quite advanced one and this especially due to the enthusiasm and competence of the teachers. The teacher’s tradition cannot be diminished by policies, by an economic crisis or the fashion for the success for which no work has been done. This tradition maintains alive our culture of respect for school, knowledge, learning,’’ PM Natalia Gavrilita stressed.     

Education and Research Minister Anatolie Topala thanked the pupils and teachers for the responsibility and dedication with which they represent the country at international competitions. ‘’During three decades, the national Olympic teams of Moldova have participated in more than 200 international and regional Olympiads and contests, getting 802 prices, among which: 55 golden medals, 136 silver ones, 472 bronze medals, 139 honourable mentions and 11 special prizes,’’ the minister noted.    

„The 2021 year was a difficult one, full of challenges and tough lessons; nevertheless, we, the pupils who won at Olympiads and our teachers, managed to achieve exceptional results at international contests. I am sure that the entire country is proud of our results,’’ said a pupil of the Vasile Alecsandri Theoretical Lyceum, Dana Mihaila, who had won a silver medal at the International Olympiad in French Language.    

The Gala of Olympiads’ Winners is a festivity organized annually by the Education and Research Ministry and the National Agency for Curriculum and Evaluation, in order to pay homage to the pupils who achieved outstanding results at regional and international Olympiads and contests in education disciplines and the teachers who contribute to the pupils’ training and the getting of these results.   

In 2021, in the conditions of the pandemic, Olympic teams were delegated for participation, in online format, to 16 regional and international Olympiads and contests organized in Georgia, Cyprus, United States, Lithuania, Moldova, Switzerland, Russia, Japan, Portugal, Singapore, Romania, Bulgaria, United Arab Emirates. Moldova hosted the Junior Balkan Mathematical Olympiad, in which 22 teams from 21 countries participated.

Those 16 regional and international Olympiads and contests were organized in the following disciplines: mathematics, informatics, chemistry, biology, physics, French language, sciences and engineering.  

At the aforementioned Olympiads and contests, pupils from Moldova got 42 prizes, of which one golden medal, three silver medals, 28 bronze ones, 8 honourable mentions, a place at the event I between teams and a special prize.
