Book about village from Moldova's central district launched at Chisinau-based museum

Chisinau, 19 January /MOLDPRES/ - A book titled, Cartea satului Buda (The Book of Buda Village) was launched at the Mihail Kogalniceanu National Literature Museum, within literary Wednesdays, today. Moderated by the director of the museum, Maria Sleahtitchi, the event took place in the context of commemorating the 80th birthday anniversary of diplomat Aurel Dragos Munteanu, born in the Buda village, central Calarasi district.       

Contacted by MOLDPRES, writer Nicolae Popa said that the volume had 464 pages and had appeared in a number of 100 copies. ‘’Ten years of work has been carried out on this book, of which eight ones in state archives,’’ Popa said.    

Writer Aurel Dragos Munteanu (born on 16 January 1942 in the Buda village, Lăpușna county, Romania, – died on 30 May 2005 in New York, USA) was a Romanian prose writer and essayist, the first director of the Romanian Television after the 1989 revolution, Romania’s ambassador to the USA, Romania’s ambassador at the United Nations and president of the UN Security Council.   

According to historian and diplomat Radu Ioanid, being knower of more foreign languages, Aurel Dragos Munteanu could have made a university or research career in America. ‘’He opted to remain in Romania as the first director of a post-totalitarian Romanian Television and spokesman of a popular, yet intensely contested regime. In March 1990, he became Romania’s ambassador at the UN and president of the Security Council when Kuwait was invaded by Iraq. He negotiated five resolutions of the Security Council without any negative vote. During 1992-94, Munteanu was Romania’s ambassador to the United States; during his mandate in Washington, Romania regained the Most- Favoured-Nation Clause,’’ Radu Ioanid added.
