Chisinau, 2 March /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, along with President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita, other officials today commemorated the heroes dead for the defence of the country’s independence and territorial integrity, the parliament’s  communication and public relations department has reported.

The officials laid wreaths of flowers at the Grieving Mother Monument from the Eternity Complex of Chisinau. They also laid flowers at the commemorative plaques of the heroes dead for the defence of the Motherland.

The message by Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, occasioned by the Memory and Gratitude Day, reads:

”Thirty years ago, our people were awoken by the sound of explosions, by the sound of war. They took up arms to defend their freedom, homes and precincts.

The Transnistria War left sequelae in hundreds of families from Moldova: sons, fathers and grandfathers died. Hundreds of people were mutilated and wounded. Yet, we got a more serious wound, the wound of the soul…

After 30 years, the war is again at the threshold of our homes. All our thoughts go to our neighbours from Ukraine, where people die, children cry and houses burn. To escape from the horror of war, tens of thousands of Ukrainians, mostly women, old people and children, found their shelter in Moldova.

Our holy duty of neighbours obliges us to host them with honour, to create as good as possible conditions for them, till they will be able to see their homes again. I want to appreciate the efficiency of the institutions, but especially to thank our fellow countrymen for the exemplary mobilization and wish to give a helping hand.

Today, I want us to appreciate the courage of those who defend their country, the courage of our veterans and to honour the memory of the heroes dead at the Dniester river in the fight for the defence of Moldova’s independence.

Let us remember their supreme sacrifice brought to the motherland and to do our utmost, in order not to allow bloodshed on our land.

The history of our nation shows us that we succeeded, when we remained united before difficulties. I am confident in the future of our country, as I have confidence in the people of Moldova.

We are for Peace. Moldova is for Peace!’’

Today, we mark the 30 years since the unleashing of the armed conflict at Dniester. On 2 March, the Memory and Gratitude Day is marked in Moldova on 2 March, in the memory of the heroes dead for the country’s independence and territorial integrity and in the honour of those who remained alive.
