Chisinau, March 6 / MOLDPRES /- Today Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on an official visit to Moldova, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.

The two officials discussed the situation regarding regional security, managing the flow of Ukrainian refugees and the help that development partners can provide to strengthen the response capacity of state institutions, as well as bilateral cooperation.

"We are committed to helping all refugees in Ukraine. The government has implemented the most comprehensive humanitarian operation in the history of the Republic of Moldova. But the magnitude of the flow of people is a challenge and we need the assistance of our friends and partners. We need this assistance quickly and with flexible tools", said the head of the Government.

The tense situation in the region has caused a surge in the wave of Ukrainian refugees, with the Republic of Moldova being one of the most affected countries facing this challenge. Currently, in our country there are over 110 thousand refugees from Ukraine, including 30 thousand children. Of these, about 2,200 people applied for asylum. In this context, state institutions have the highest priority to ensure the efficient management of the flow of refugees, including public order, but also economic, financial and energy stability.

"We are just beginning to understand the economic consequences of this war, with trade routes and value chains disrupted. We have taken swift measures to ensure food security, to change transport routes and to reorient trade, but we will have to do much more to ensure the economic and financial stability and well-being of our citizens, "said Natalia Gavrilița.

For his part, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed support for Moldova's efforts to receive and assist Ukrainian refugees and noted that "the coagulation efforts of the Government and all state institutions in managing the flow of refugees have been and the hospitality of Moldovan citizens these days is impressive. "

The American official welcomed the decision of the Republic of Moldova to sign the application for membership in the European Union: “We express our support for the democracy, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. The history of democracy and the fight against corruption that your country is telling the whole world is truly inspiring, it is a history that humanity needed very much, exactly in these turbulent times ", said Antony Blinken.
