Chisinau, 17 March /MOLDPRES/ - On 16 March 2014, Russia, taking over the power institutions from the Crimea Autonomous Republic and the Sevastopol city by armed force, organized the so-called ‘’referendum on the status of Crimea.’’ Moldova’s government expressed its position on this subject quite clearly, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported.

The so-called ‘’referendum’’ from 16 March 2014 on the status of the Crimea peninsula is illegal, as it directly runs counter Ukraine' Constitution and the international law.

The circumstances in which this so-called ‘’referendum’’ took place proves that is had nothing in common with the free and democratic expression of the people’s will and does not fit the international standards in the field.

Respectively, Moldova does not recognize it and describes Russia’s decision of incorporation of a sovereign territory of Ukraine as a glaring violation of the principles of the UN Charter and of the Helsinki Final Act.

The so-called referendum and the annexation of Crimea represent a serious violation of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and internationally recognized borders. Moldova condemns these deeds and regards Crimea as inalienable part of Ukraine. On this period of ordeal, Moldova expresses solidarity with Ukraine.
